Ronnie Biggs was born in East London in 1929 and is most well known for his role in the Great Train Robbery in 1963 when he stole £2.6 million.
After being sentenced to a prison term in HM Wandsworth, Biggs went on to escape after scaling the wall with a rope ladder. He fled to Paris, later traveling to Australia and then Brazil where he lived as a “fugitive celebrity” for thirty years. After numerous attempts by the British police to have him extradited back to the UK, Biggs managed to keep slipping through loop holes.
However in 2001 Biggs told the Sun newspaper that due to ill health he would be willing to return to the UK. He eventually returned in May of that year and was re-imprisoned. He was finally released in 2009 on compassionate grounds.
