Born Marshall Bruce Mathers III in 1972, Eminem grew up without knowing his father. And though he tried several times to get in touch with him, he was completely unsuccessful. He grew up with his mother, Deborah Mathers who found it difficult to keep a job. As a result of this, they moved around a lot. Eminem was always the new kid in school and got bullied a lot. He failed the ninth grade thrice and dropped out of school. He found solace in rap music which was just hitting the music scene then. The lyrics and poetry gave him expression for his rage and unhappiness.

Eminem faced a lot of challenges in trying to establish himself as an artist in the rap genre including racial prejudice. Through dogged determination and a refusal to quit, he rose to the top of the genre and is responsible for changing the face of the rap music industry.
